On startup (Dell laptop with XP SP2) I get a message like this: 'Tray application encountered a problem and needs to shut down'. The message has a Norton / Symantec icon.

Do your event logs give you any more information about the error? Do you have all the latest updates for XP and Norton?

In your Administrative Tools there is a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) called the Event Viewer. You can see the Application logs there and get a more detailed description of the error. Sometimes if it's a common error there will be links to fixes. If not, then you might be able to use some of the error text provided to search for a fix.
