Dual Operating Systems - Windows

I've wound up with both Win 98 and Win 2000

My computer came pre-loaded with Windows 98. I tried installing a Windows 2000 upgrade - now I've ended up with dual operating systems. When my computer starts up, I'm asked which one I want to work with at the beginning.

Question: Can I uninstall Windows 2000 at this point without causing any problems? Or what's my best course of action. I have backed up all my working files to a DVD RW just in case.

Thanks.

You can reinstall Win 2000 (again!) but be careful to choose to update Win98 to Win 2K to prevent yet another copy. However, considering NTFS etc, it's probably best to scrap the Win 98 and start from scratch. Boot from the CD, delete all existing partitions, create new partition, quick format it, install Win 2K and the drivers.

You're saying to uninstall Windows 98 and start again with a fresh install of Windows 2000?

Yes.

Unless you have a compelling reason to keep 98.

None that I can think of. But we use Windows XP at work. I would rather use that for a clean install. Which is better in your opinion?

Just make sure that you do a thorough backup of your important files and test it before you uninstall Win98.

I work with both Windows XP and 2000 daily and I'd have to say that in my environment WinXP is more stable. However there are certainly those who swear by Win2K. Regardless, either is preferable to Win98 in terms of security and stability.

If youve backed-up all your work just go ahead and format your hard drive ready for a fresh install. I have encountered problems when running computer/laptop with both 98 and 2000 installed, similarly with 2000 and xp installed with dual boot. Id go with xp pro if you can get your hands on it! Really nice to use, strip it down to the bear minimum and plenty of gpedit.msc from run to streamline it.
