XP Pro Hangups

I have 5 workstations running XP Pro SP2 connecting to a domain at church. Lately 2 of these machines experience lockups when the users are in Word 2003. When I say lockups I mean that the machine gets the hour glass while in Word. Sometimes you can go to Task Mgr and end the Word executable, but other times the Task Mgr won't even come up. I have to do a power off reset.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Have you tried a live update for Office and XP?

Are they old machines, I had a laptop that started locking up after installing SP2, the solution was to update the bios.

The machines are Dell 2350 and 2400 with 512MB RAM. Can remember what the processor speed is.

What do you mean by a live update of XP and Office?

I believe steve is referring to Windows Update [windowsupdate.microsoft.com] and Office Update [office.microsoft.com].

I've found it best with older machines that when going through Office Update if I just do one or two updates at a time. Sometimes if there are several I've encountered hangups in the update if I select them all at once.

I checked Windows Update but not Office. I'll check it out in a day or so.

Thanks

just to share, I had a problem when opening ms word document for certain file only, the ms word restarted each time I open that files, its fix when I uninstall printer from the system.
Try uninstall the printer first to make sure your printer not causing the problem.
