damn, I missed noticing this part of the update and I don't want their obnoxious little prog sitting in the background. I got rid of it before this latest update but don't remember how.

Found these instruction on register dot com:

Use a text editor to open C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf, and change
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 to
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

but the date of this article was back in 2002 ...

will this still work or is there a better way to get rid of messenger?

Disabling Messenger Service in Windows XP [microsoft.com]

I believe that may be what you're after.

Thanks for the quick reply Birdman but unfortunately that doesn't work. It was already disabled there.

any other ideas?

Lots of websites give you a way to do it rather then URL drop, it is click start then select run and copy the following

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

and paste and hit enter.

It uninstalls it so it should not come back even after updates.

Gave up trying to find a way to uninstall/disable and used Restore to bo back. Made sure I unchecked the Windows Messenger update. That worked :)

<added> just a minute too late, or I was too early .. Thanks outrun!

Wouldn't it be nice if norton and other antivirus programs removed messenger for you?
