What can the run box "Start --> Run" box actually do?
Apart from opening a few progarams by typing them in I see not much point.

The Run box is used to get into the guts of the OS. Assuming we're talking XP here, all of the advanced admin tools are available using Run->CMD. Examples are ping, tracert, ipconfig, and netstat, but there are hundreds more.
