Internet Works, But Not File Sharing.

I am a total newbie on networking.
I bought a mini switch 5-port(model:EP-805SX site:www.surecom-net.com), connected my two PCs (both running windows xp pro sp1) and had no problem with internet sharing. But I don't really know how to get file sharing work.

I have assigned the same workgroup for the PCs, and enabled the 2 options in the "Network Sharing and Security" of my Shared Documents. But still can't see the other computer in My Network Places. That's my problem.

.i have two comps ...1 running XP HOME..other running WIN98.I m able to ping from XP to 98 . but the other way is not workin .but i m not able to share files either way . how do i setup NETBEUI protocol in 98 . I m able to enable the option NETBIOS over TCP/IP in 98. HW do make the files accessing across my home network

Setting up the NetBEUI protocol on all your machines, as mentioned in this recent thread: Setting up a home network [webmasterworld.com] is one of the easiest ways to get this to work.

yes bill , i went thro the entire thread there . but my WIN98 is acting a little weird . i installed NETBEUI in both my machines . i m able to ping from XP to win 98 but not the other way . also this option "NETBIOS over TCP" under DNS tab in WIN98 is not enabled .

Check filewall - if you use ZoneAlarm or anything like this check that they assigned proper trust level to your internal network (by default ZA will consider your network untrusted and prevent sharing).

Windows 98 isn't that great for networks. Unfortunately I don't have any more Win98 machines connected to my network, so I can't check anything directly for you. Here are a bunch of tips off the top of my head:

• One old trick was to have the exact same username/password on both machines.
  
• Make sure all machines belong to the same Workgroup.
  
• You've really got to be careful of AntiVirus software and firewalls when setting up these networks. Turn all that software off until you get things running.
  
• Make sure that there are shared folders on the XP machine for the Win98 machine to see.
  
• Try enabling the Guest account on XP. Just open the User Accounts in the control panel and enable the Guest account. It should work right away, although you may have to reboot the Win98 machine.

It's been a while since I've played with Win98, but you can get it to work.
