I've gotten used to using HP FontSmart, which came with my old HP printer, as my fonts manager in Windows 9x, but I don't think it will work with XP.

What I liked about FontSmart was its very intuitive interface... it showed the list of uninstalled fonts (in the face of the font, if you follow) on the left panel, and the list of installed fonts (also showing the actual font faces) on the right. You could easily move fonts back and forth between the installed and uninstalled lists, and compare them in context.

I did a bit of searching and downloaded a very nice shareware utility called Printer's Apprentice, which is a lot more powerful than FontSmart, with a greater variety of font displays... but its font lists are all in Arial.

You can select displays of individual fonts from installed and uninstalled lists, but the lists in Arial don't give you the face overview or the easy comparisons of all the fonts that FontSmart did. Any recommendations for something that will do this?

I think I'm only interested in TrueType fonts, but you never know.

I use Suitcase from Extensis. Well worth the money. You can group fonts by folder, preview mutilple sizes and type what you want the preview to say. With Suitcase I manage around 2,500 fonts on my machine (not all active at the same time) with no problems.
