Microsoft's Overnight Reboot

Curious how many others were affected

I arrived to find every XP professional computer rebooted this morning. I suspected Microsoft, and just got confirmation from them that - for security reasons - Microsoft automatically updated all our software and performed a forced reboot on every machine, even though my settings are to notify me before any updates.

I'm never pleased when there is an automated process that is performed without my permission.

bcolflesh, that's the problem... I have "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" set in the update configurations.

If a hotfix/update was applied, an event would show in your System Event Log. The source would be something like Automatic Updates or NtServicePack.

Are those there?

If not, then your reboot might not have been caused by an update.

If they are, and you have that setting (notify only) like you said, that's kinda messed up. I would go into the Automatic Update settings, set it to something else, apply, then set it back to notify and apply.

There was an update downloaded yeaterday. The little warning icon is waiting in my toolbar for me to apply it.
We have an XP Pro SP2 system that is not on-line 24/7.

I was awake when this happened, it was very strange to me, because my Auto-Update was set OFF or at least I think so. The update agent reported updates beeing downloaded and ready to install. The patch included 3 important updated and 1 CRITICAL. After installing the package it reuiqred rebooting, which I tryed to pause, because I was in the middle of something and it happened that every 5-10 minutes the message saying "Reboot required" popped up on my screen. Pretty strange tho :) I guess that's the way leggends are born - are you expecting another "Microsoft hacked" press realease? I do :)
