Advancements in Scanner Technology

Hello,

I am attempting to scan high resolution images of different cloth materials. I am scanning with an Epson Perfection 1200U (2000 Year Model). I am getting OK results, but feel they could be better. I am wondering if a newer scanner would offer much better results. Has the technology improved or is it more technique?
