I'm finally ready to start my procrastination-delayed blog .. figuring I'll use Wordpress, but wondering about the 301 I have in my .htaccess file .. and a couple of other things.

So a few questions, please:

1 - is either blog.mysite.com/ or mysite.com/blog/ better?

2 - if blog.mysite.com/ is better, how do I handle it re the www 301 redirect in my .htaccess

3 - it will be very difficult to come up with a daily blog on my subject. Is a weekly blog effective? How about monthly?

4 - the blog is tied into the same subject matter as my site, but I plan on not allowing blog comments. Is that a negative? Is having an email address for questions and comments a good idea?

5 - any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Dave

If your site and blog related then /blog/ but if your blog can have a different identity then blog.yoursite.com

if blog.mysite.com/ is better, how do I handle it re the www 301 redirect in my .htaccess

I am little confused here, I am afraid that you will have explain more. For me it is just a subdomain and it takes care of it.

it will be very difficult to come up with a daily blog on my subject. Is a weekly blog effective? How about monthly?

Long term Blog value is directly proportional to the value of blogger, no matters if it is monthly or daily or weekly. If you will write once in a month I will just come once in a month (I may forget as well), if it is weekly then expect me weekly (still chances of I forgetting your blog). Write as often as possible. Even you think of a collective blog in such cases.

the blog is tied into the same subject matter as my site, but I plan on not allowing blog comments. Is that a negative? Is having an email address for questions and comments a good idea?

This will be just like my strict lecturer not allowing me to ask anything in class. I never liked him either.

5 - any other suggestions?

Keep asking your doubts at WebmasterWorld :) related to blogging.

Hope it helps.

Hi AjiNIMC,

it will be very difficult to come up with a daily blog on my subject. Is a weekly blog effective? How about monthly?

Write as often as possible. Even you think of a collective blog in such cases.

Can you explain "collective blog" versus .. um .. I just assumed that blogs were better done in segments. I also hope to have a few sites pick up my blog as a feed

LOL! I actually want questions, since questions are pertinent to the subject, but I'm concerned about SPAM. I'm just looking for the best approach for handling them.

Hope it helps.

Already. Thanks.:)

Collective blog means one blog many authors. This helps when you do not have enough time. So if 7 people can come together and write one post per week, it make it one per day.

I never worry about spams till it is not there. Once it comes I have a solution for it. I am always smarter than spammers :). Some of the solutions are semi-approval system for comments, link based moderation, notification for every comment, only members comments and I try to keep it open for all as much as possible.

I guess I should be doing better homework, but do you know if this feature in in Wordpress?

If you are going to use Wordpress, make sure you install Captcha visual confirmation script. If not, you are going to receive tons of spams from drugs, porns, and gambling sites that makes it not worth for you to allow comments as you will be wasting a lot of your time to delete spams. The time spent deleting spams is better spent on creating contents for your blogs.

How is the traffic at your main site? If the traffic from repeat visitors is low, I suggest you disable comment.

Search engines love site that is constantly updated on daily basis. If the content of your site is updated once in a blue moon, it will make it harder for search engine bots to find a reason to spider your site.

Successful blogs out there are updated daily. I know it is very hard to blog on daily basis, but it all depend on you...

Yes I am a wordpress lover, all these features are available there. Even programming for wordpress is very simple. You will get a lot of plugins for wordpress. Try searching for wordpress plugins in google (or any of your fav SE).

make sure you install Captcha visual confirmation script.

Yes, it is must to stop to stop automated spams. I advise you to wait till you get 3 spams on an average everyday.

If you take decision on the basis of past you will get your future no better than past. Allow comments to see repeated visitors :).

I love to talk about it but somehow am not allowed to. BLOG === Better Listing In Google

The traffic is low for 2 reasons.

1 - its a very niche site
2 - it's a new site

My site is about living "overseas". I only have experience about "living in (one "foreign" country)", which is what the blog will be about.

I add site content from time-to-time, but I have limitations.

So far I have lined up 26 topics to write 500 - 1000 words about. I figure I should have 50 or so before I start.

In that case listen to Ajinimc's good advice :

If you take decision on the basis of past you will get your future no better than past. Allow comments to see repeated visitors :).

because you might get lucky and find some responses from expats with similar interests out there...

or you might get spammed once your blog is indexed by blog search engines out there...
