I guess I should be more specific, what would you do to get visitors if you were starting forums in <snip>a competitive space</snip>?

I've edited the thread title and removed the specifics. It's sufficient to know that what you want to achieve is a succesful forum in one of the most competitive spaces on the internet. Advice from there is pretty generic.
In simple terms, it's all about getting traffic and creating a sense of "community". The former is basic common or garden SEO/SEM - I recommend a look through the library threads of the SEO forum here. You always might want to consider a PPC compaign.
The latter is really about having high quality and useful threads, which you'll need to start in the first instance, which encourage response and user involvement. Often that's as simple as leaving a thread with a leading question present in it.
I would also suggest you have a look through the Community Building Forum library (where I've moved this thread) for more substantial pointers on how this can be achieved.

What do you see as the major obstacle right now? Attracting traffic to the forums? Or getting visitors to participate?
