vbulletin vs phpbb updating

hi,

we run a phpbb forum which works very well, but i have made several changes to both layout and code and every update is a royal PITA ;)

we would like to move to vbulletin. i read about the new 'hooks' option for hacking vb - has any used this, will this facilitate upgrading when updates are released?

any other general comments on vbulletin updating are most appreciated.

I moved from phpbb to vb for security,volume, and updating purposes. And yes, I've found vb far easier to update. However, when I did the move I made a concerted effort to cut down on all non-standard hacks, that's part of the reason why it's easier for me to update.

If the few bucks for a vb license doesn't bother you, make the move. The software is far superior in so many other ways - users, mods and I couldn't be happier since we moved.

the reasons you give are exactly the reasons i have for moving.

One difference between the two is that vBB has features built-in that are available has hacks on phpBB. From a practical standpoint, fewer hacks on a given installation makes upgrading easier and reduces the chance of conflicts between multiple hacks.

i have just tried the admin demo of vbulletin and it seems much easier to use and configure how one wants, i especially like the forum-depth configuration. i will definitely be upgrading.

am a bit apprehensive about importing half a million posts, but developers on vbulletin say they have done it with 2 million posts!

Big-boards.com tracks the largest forums on the internet. There's a reason why vBulletin is used on so many of the top boards.

OT - can you imagine what kind of server farm they have for that site with half a billion posts?
