Message Board Extremes

may not be recommended...but what's the "extreme" for customization?

For the average user of message boards...most phpBB boards all kind of look and feel the same. Sure there are subtle differences on the back end, on the user expressions, and on which modules the board admin has implemented and which have been made available to users...

....but, let's just call those "shades of grey" for the purpose of this thread.

My questions are...

1. What is the "extreme" when it comes to ideas about how to customize a phpBB board's look and feel using only currently available modules?

2. Moving beyond the currently available modules...so, assuming you developed some of your own...what are some of the EXTREMES (not necessarily the most functional or the ones you'd recommend) that you could envision as far as:

2a. End user control of the look and feel of the layout?

2b. End user expression in the posts and profiles they write?

3.The "extremes" would still have to be compatible with the integration standards for the phpBB software...but aside from that....

3a. How "out of this world" can you envision a board looking?

3b. How "out of this world" can you envision in terms of features that offer the end user more control of their experience with your forum?
