I need to build a portal for internal employees of a fairly large company. Has any one had any experience with Sharepoint?

Yes, from a user point of view, it was cumbersome, hard to navigate, and the search function was challenging. I could not operate a website profitably with this software.

A year or two ago we dabbled with an internal portal using Sharepoint. Users could customize their menu items, and we had a small forum/announcement area. It was quite basic. The only reason I can see to go this route is if you have an all-Microsoft shop and Sharepoint is already installed & paid for.

It sucks from an admin point of view too. Very buggy, user management is awful, haven't noticed any fixes or updates for 2+ years on 2 different hosts, transferring to the new host proved impossible--had to do it all by hand, only the techies seem to use it (user stats has never worked), and the design of the discussion forums render them worthless.

It's like FrontPage for Intranets. You can use FrontPage 2003(only) to customize a bit but I found that as cumbersome as Sharepoint. It does do some cool collaboration stuff with Outlook 2003 Calendars, Tasks, Contacts, etc. but all users must have 2003 versions to schedule meetings, resources, etc.. Find something else unless your users demand it.
