Just wondering how well tolerate americans jokes about america, people in usa, president and other american things. Sometimes i find some great jokes about amerecans but i am afraid to share it (not just here, everywhere on the net where i talk to americans). especially after 11.sept(those jokes are NOT making fun from tragedies, criplles etc!). But jokes about plitics, patriotism etc.

for example 5 minutes ago i read a "us patriot registration" form on whitehouse.org (which is full of jokes i think) but after considering 5 minutes i hesitated to post it here(although there is nothing offensive there).

So what do americans think of that kind of pages and jokes? I know that for example british people (UK) they arew the most humouros people on the planet - they KNOW to laugh when jokes are "ON THEM". For example if the funny incident that happend to Bush few days ago while watching the game would happend to one of royal familly or more to politics they would imediatelly make jokes of this. But in America i dont know , i have a feeling that this is more "embarasmment to real amercians" than something to ROTFLWYSIH (in public)!

Do you guys like jokes about the politicans or prez you voted for(in europe they do)? Or way of living? or you habbits ETC?(jokes like on whitehouse.org which i very like). Or patriotism? Especially those things that can be sensitive(things like this, not regular jokes becasue otherwise america is full of jokes. )

In Europe and especially in UK , which has favorite humor to me, the definiton of humor is :

You are humourous person when you can laugh on jokes ON YOU(rself).

Just asking, want to know where to "draw a line" with an American(not just here, everywhere):)

And yes, I would like to know if this POST is near crossing the line or did it cross the line? This would pretty answer my question :)

I hope there are no hard feelings, i dint mean to offend anyone- just asking :)

Jon:

We are very tolerant. If we think the joke is funny, we'll laugh. If not, we'll kick your @$$. :)

Lawman

P.S. Just joking.

I used to think I and my fellow Americans could take a joke. I don't anymore. I don't think it has anything to do with 9-11 either. IMHO it has a lot to do with political correctness, generational attitudes and the power to control others.

IMO I think we Americans have traded in much of our ability to laugh at ourselves for the ability to to wear self rightousness on our sleaves. Of course this is a generalization about group dynamics and your mileage with individuals will vary.

It really seems like no matter what one says there is somebody willing to jump all over you for it. And I'm not talking about cruel stuff either.

Maybe I'm wrong. But it seems like nobody can take a joke anymore. I've become very cautious in what I say.

That is my take on it. Others might disagree. :)

I think you should be mostly safe posting humour on this board, so long as you keep the Forum Charter [webmasterworld.com] in mind. I know there is a perception (among Europeans anyway :)) that Americans are congenitally incapable of getting irony, sarcasm etc, but you'll find that just about EVERYONE on this board is intelligent, educated and open-minded (the Internet tends to attract that sort, IMO). If in doubt, ask a Moderator. They can make a definitive decision, or at least pass it up to Mr Tabke quickly.

A bit of common sense should go a long way though (I've got some screamingly funny image files in my mail, which I wouldn't dare post here - I find them hilarious, but I just KNOW some people could get really offended by one or two of them)

I've found everything has to have a moral for the ya.. Americans. Look at their sitcoms. We make a comedy series in the UK for fun, not morals. Look at men behaving badly...classic series with no morals; brought out in the US and each episode ended with a moral. WHY????

P.S. Just joking.

Funny you should mention this... ;)

I sometimes get the impression that this line is the most important part of mainstream american humour. In few other places have I sensed such a strong desire in people to eliminate all ambiguity that they're indeed having fun. Fortunately, this is not quite so abundant in the circles I tend to hang out with (including this forum), but it does seem to be a strong force.

Jon-

My posts generally fall into three categories. 1. Where I actually seem to know what I'm talking about; 2. Where I obviously don't have a clue; and 3. Where I'm trying to impose my warped South Georgia USA humor on the captive readers of this list server.

Tall Troll-

Now, whatever happened to that famous, politically incorrect, hilarious image poster from America's 51st state (Canada) - you know, what's-his-name, Macguru.

Lawman

P.S. I am following rcjordan's policy on smilies for this post.

I think The Onion is unsurpassed in this regard, definitive proof that the US can be as funny and unpolitically-correct about this sort of thing as the best of them.

I think most americans love to have fun and laugh at themselves.. If you watched the late night talk shows last night you'd have found many many jokes about the pretzel incident...

The problem is that there are a few that get easily offended (not just americans)... and because this is a forum for professionals we have to try be sensitive to a wide variety of personalities. To tell jokes is fine, but at wmw we do try to stay away from topics about politics and religion..

>> I think The Onion is unsurpassed

Hmmm, suddenly, I suspect georged of being a h4x0r. It is well known that The Onion is a pinko, subversive e-rag. They run Lunix [adequacy.org] you know. Credit to gethan for finding that. I have a new favourite response [adequacy.org]

As for Macguru, as even his nic puts him clearly outside the comforting boundaries of Wintel land, I think we can safely assume he has reported for deprogramming [webmasterworld.com], per my advice to Hope. I'm sure he'll be back once his new AOL account has been activated

PS I too am following rcjordans smilie guidelines now. If you break them too often, he uses his ¦\/¦4D 5¦<1Llz to put bad, illegal software like "Flash" on your machine. This piece of scumware will stop you from EVER BEING ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH MICROSOFTTM AGAIN. Excuse me, I have to go and lie down now, I feel quite faint

>>Just wondering how well tolerate americans jokes about america<<

Too general; when trying to understand americans you almost have to go canonical:

asian.americans
african.americans
arab.americans
cuban.americans
caucasian.americans
latin.americans
native.americans
texan.americans (actually not americans, more of a hybrid)

most will tolerate jokes about the hub, but don't mess with the spokes.

If I left anyone out here, sorry.

Can we Americans tolerate jokes about Americans? Anyone remember the Monica Lewinsky scandal...

I think most Americans can make and laugh at jokes aimed at us, our gov't, and our society... but the ones who CAN'T take a joke are generally noisiest about it.

As far as public venues like WmW, I think you're best off avoiding race, religion and politics though... because those folks who like to make noise make a LOT of it.

We laugh at anything that is funny, and it just so happens that jokes about Americans aren’t funny. However, we very much enjoy making fun of Europeans, simply because there is so much there to laugh at. If I had a funny accent like the British, I would laugh at myself too!

Having said that, some places in America deserve to be made fun of, but only by other Americans. It is perfectly acceptable to laugh at Cleveland for example. It is also very funny to make fun of the President as long as you are a citizen (second generation). However, any outside wise-cracks are usually viewed as a potential declaration of war.

Hope this helps

As a Brit I totally resent the comment:

...a funny accent like the British

Only one funny accent????

We British have HUNDREDS of funny accents!

I need only travel 10 miles to have my accent laughed at:)

Well, personally I find most jokes about Americans a bit too obvious for my taste... but I won't elaborate on that, as I'd probably end up violating the "no politics" boundary by the time I was done. ;)

Good thing I'm a citizen then. ::whew::

We British have HUNDREDS of funny accents!

Well you all sound the same to me (look the same too!) The point is that you can’t speak regular English like us. And you spell many things wrong, drive on the wrong side of the road, use the wrong measurement system, electrical system, pluming…I can go on and on…

P.S. While it is now wrong to make fun of New York, it is still perfectly acceptable to make fun of Staten Island (unless you are Polish).

Speaking as an Irishman who are the target of many jokes I would say that I dont mind my country or my countrymen being ridiculed or made fun off. Jokes accentuate national/regional foibles & customs to the point where they are ridiculous and humourous.

The way I see it americans must have a sense of humour to put up with all the crap you have on your TVs. Jerry Springer (how you watch that is beyond me), Wrestling (which even my 4 year old nephew knows isn't real :) ).

and for the record any jokes about our Prime Minister are normally taken as acts of war as well.

Hope this helps ! :)

Just to clear up some points made by nowhere. Fact: A large portion of the world drive on the left as do the British. Fact: We have a higher literacy rate than the US. Fact: We have a higher number of regional dialects than the US. Fact: Our electrical system IS the safest in the world. Fact: We have the most modern plumming technology in the world, with most of the stuff you use in the US lagging behind. Fact: The English university system is the most respected in the world. Fact: The US has one of the worst educational systems. Fact: The US has the highest number of stupid laws in the developed world. And how can you say what is the wrong or right measurement system??? In fact Nowhere, have you ever left the United States???? I could go on and on, but I'm just setting some facts straight.

LOL LOL

as far as i'm concerned we are all part of the same civilised (english spelling:)) civilisation (english spelling again :)). If you want to make jokes about the British (which as said before we do ourselves) then that is fine by me as long as you can take a joke too.

Do you sing the national anthem every morning? Do you like to hang the US flag on your house just to show you're a patriot?

I can take a joke no problems. What I can't stand is hearing, "By the way, we rule the Earth! We have the best army, best this, best that..." from certain citizens of a certain nation...
