try a google search for "offer free web based email" and gmail comes up number one

what are the chances that gmail is doing a bit of self promotion it abit like windows bundling Windows Media Player.

Different possibility: Gmail has been buzzing hard around the news and the blogosphere for about three months now and probably has an amazing amount of incoming links.

Probably not. "free web based email" would have more searches, less words, but G isn't in the top 5. For 'web based email' its only 10th place.

If they were tweaking the results, you'd think they'd be number 1 for a few more search terms.
