I've been a gmail beta tester for about 2 weeks. I use my account very regularly with almost 150 messages totaling 7mb. I have not yet had the option to invite other users. I don't believe there is any information on this elsewhere on the net. So, for all of those who have had invites, I ask the following questions.

How long did you have your account before you could invite people?
How many messages did you have?
How much storage space did you use?
How many invites did you get?

If you wouldn't mind posting this info, and anything else that you think could determine when, and how many invitations you were granted. Maybe we can figure out how google does this.

Adam,

welocme to WebmasterWorld.

there is NO real set formula methinks.

I am quite a heavy user of Gmail but have not had any invites for others.

however 2 of my staff members who are rare Gmail users have had invite opportunities within 3 days of joining.

so who knows :)

I think so too. I'm using my GMail with about 10-15 emails/day and didn't get any possibility to invite others so far. I think the fact that some people get the invites after their first login shows that it's really random.

But I still hope that improved usage will improve the chance of getting the possibility to invite a friend. At least I hope so.

I saw the 2 invites when I first accessed my Gmail account. I was invited to try Gmail because I was an active blogger, so perhaps that might be a connection.

I had one normal invite before I even sent a single email from Gmail... Also, and I thought this was quite cool, Google had an 'invite your mother to Gmail for mothers day' invite link on my account in the week leading up to mother's day.

I got my invite through blogger today :) - For an invite this way I think you have had to be a blogger for a 'substantial' period then you get an invite - a friend has had a blog for 4 months and no invite yet.

I do have another blog account under different psuedo/email so I guess I can make two Gmail accounts :)

So if I start the bidding at.....

I also saw the 2 invites, within a few days of registering from Blogger, so there must be some relation there. None of the people that I have invited have seen invites.

The other members of my blog, did get two invites 3 days after they signed up.

hmm...

I'm a blogger member and had the option to invite 2 people when I registered, so I got my mum and dad as it was their anniversary and they needed an alternative option to MSN - as they really hate the speed and one or two or three MB space :)

Hoping to get some more...
