They only thing make me a bit nervous is contextual ad, not the ad by itself, but to serve this ad, you've got to "read" the email?
BTW GG, I write to you today for a little problem on a probably penalized site with the : Dissatisfied? Help us improve form. Hope for the school dropping kids you'll have time to read it!
Sorry for my poor english writing
Have a 'real' product you are about to launch - but ham it up a bit, and announce it on April Fools Day.
There is enough credibility to make it seem real - and enough 'telltale' humour' - "Heck Yeah!" - to make it look like an April Fools Day joke (and canned meat).
It has to be real. If it wasn't - they'd have admitted it by now!
MSNBC: ...The new service, which goes live Thursday at www.gmail.com...
Search Engine Watch : ...Rosing said the system has been in development for a number of years and used internally by employees. Now it's being turned into a product for the public, though most of the public will still need to wait a few weeks to try it....
I probably have to wait a few weeks to try it ;-(
If its a hoax, Danny Sullivan took the bait.
Gmail is "Google saying, 'Look, you want to come after us in search, we'll come after you, as well,' " says Danny Sullivan, editor of SearchEngineWatch newsletter. "It puts the other guys on the defensive. Now, Yahoo has to evaluate whether to improve their e-mail searching capability and whether they should provide more storage."

Its real. Can I get a personalized email alert whem gmail.com is live?
But it's odd that this is all being thrown together over the course of this evening. I hope the Grateful Dead's cook is working late tonight to keep everyone well-fed at G-plex.

If I were betting on where that came from (it is April Fool's Day so what the heck)...

"Amidst rampant media speculation, Google Inc. today announced it is testing a preview release of Gmail"
Uhhh, well it doesn't seem like a joke to me - but that first line is BS. I don't recall hearing anything like this.
Gmail is listed on this page of domains for sale:

Apparently google changed the whois about 5 days ago. Too short for a real product launch, but not too short for some real plans.
If it is a joke - there are going to be a lot of ticked off people. So I vote not a joke - even though it sounds fishy.
If I could upload all my favourite pdf's [webmasterworld.com] etc and it could full text search the attachments... that would be something..
