I'm on to them! I've figured out why they publicly call it Gmail instead of GoogleMail. It's a code name. They knew everyone would be groveling for accounts but didn't want to let on that they knew.
So Grovelmail is known as Gmail. Clever. :)

I thought it was because it was the webmaster version of "gspot" ... Difficult to find at first ..and apparently to judge by most postings in these fora..the cause of multiple org*sms to those who do find one .. With intense speculation as to the nature of the experience by those who are still looking...
