Something that I can waste a few hours on

I normally keep one game on my computer, something that I can use to kill time when traveling or when I need some shut down time.

I have taken my current game as far as it will go, so I need a new one.

But I am not a video game player so I have no clue what's out there and what is good, so I thought I would ask you guys.

Keep in mind, I am a woman, so being the sterotypical female video game player, I like goal oriented, save the princess, kill the bigger and bigger monsters type games rather than the score oriented, car go round the track, can I do it better this time type games.

Anybody have a recommendation for a good PC game?

Try an online game like everquest2, world of warcraft, ultima online...etc.

You get to meet lots of strangers online and form parties for dungeon crawls and share loot...etc. You can easily kill a few hours a day playing these games.

Check out Guild Wars for PC. It rocks.

And if you want to play something on Xbox, Knights of the Old Republic & Sith Lords is worth every moment.

Other good recommendations

Age of Empire
Age of Mythology

what's your current game?

if you like role playing games then try dungeon siege 2, it is a great game and fits your description.

though if you could tell me some games you have liked I can prbably recommend a few more

Try an online game like everquest2, world of warcraft, ultima online...etc.

From what I have heard you can not only kill a few hours but your entire life by some of these games. ;)

AS far as I concerned there will only ever be one game... CIV III (CIV IV if you have a nice video card)

If you want to be completely immersed in building your own world then there is nothing quite as absorbing IMO.

Begin with a meagre civilization - establish a city, build up your resources discover things like the wheel or physics to advance - war or trade with you neighbours, create a navy, theatres, colosseums, knights, hospitals - build the hanging gardens and make your people happy, mine gold to become rich, discover universal suffrage and improve your population's trust, or be the first to launch a space shuttle....

I don't usually go for games but this ones brilliant :)

Try 'Wall street raider' if you understand the stock market. Be warned though that it's HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!

The only video or computer game I've really ever played is Final Fantasy VII.

Fun stuff, takes something like 100+ hours though.

But it's pretty old, not sure how it runs on newer systems (by newer I mean Win XP)

I'll second Civ4 - even though I had to upgrade my video card to get the best out of it.

Trouble is, you'll get no work done at all...

Just fire up the old Civ II, a classic.

If you like finance, there is a great stock market sim called Wall Street Raider that is cheap and a quick download. I have been hooked for a decade on that one and the owner upgrades it constantly.

<added> oops, WSR was already mentioned, so that 2 votes

hannamyluv -
the best low-stress game I ever wasted many hours on was Myst, then its sequel Riven.

Completely free of any bad-guys or boogly-wooglies to kill! Calmly solve clues and open new worlds, etc.

Knights of the Old Republic & Sith Lords comes in a PC version, too. KOTOR was a game of the year and can be had pretty cheap as it is a year or two old. Both are great games.

KOTOR II The Sith Lords is the sequel, and I thought it was even better than the first one in terms of game play and plot points. I played it with an emphasis on Dexterity and found that it made me ridiculously difficult to hit once the character reached a higher level, which allowed me to get in four to six hits in a row. Both games use the D&D type rolls and character classes.

Far Cry is scary, lots of stealth type missions with bursts of violence taking down the enemies as you work your way across a chain of islands trying to reach a volcano that houses a hidden base.

Incredibly open ended, there are so many ways to complete these missions that you may want play it over again to explore it better. Typical settings are outside on an island, or else indoors in caverns-very claustrophic and scary as you can hear ape monster mutants grunting from around corners. At one point you get kicked out of a helicopter with no weapons onto an island of vicious mutants. You can drive jeeps, boats, and fly a hang glider.

Far Cry is not all action, either. There's a good twisty plot behind it. Fun stuff.

Schizm- Mysterious Journey is great if you like puzzle solving, exploring new (old) civilizations and aren't interested in destruction of new civilizations...

Intuitive interface, easy to play, hard to solve and very relaxing.
