What are shopping carts called, by the way? Aren't they usually referred to as just "baskets" (so, "Panier")?

Yes, "panier" is the most appropriate (basket)...
Just for your information, shopping cart like the one found in supermarket are called "caddie" (a golf term in English). But really not appropriate for website.
