I love a ripe juicy cantaloupe. The ones I pick out are almost universally tasteless.

My wife, on the other hand, seems to be able to select the ripest, juiciest cantaloupe on the shelf. She can even do this when they are not in season.

BTW, I just sliced and ate one that Mrs. lawman picked out the other day. Mmmmmm. She did not let me down. I guess I'll keep 'er. :)

Now this is weird. I just sat down with WebmasterWorld and a hunk of cantaloupe for my afternoon break.

Had to pick it out myself, but appears I got lucky this time, now and juicy and refreshing.

My wife ( who BTW has near no sense of smell and couldn't tell by smell a melon from a cinder block ..let alone if it was ready ..may be I'm lucky as her nose is about level with my belt buckle ..shes only 1.59 meters tall ;)) saw me click on the page ..open it and fall about in a heap of tears and laughter ..says we are all "reprobates" ..she looked up the translation to be sure that was the word she wanted ..she used the word "obsedé" too ..( lawman can look it up ..Jake knows it already I presume ..;))

We wont actually see cantaloupe available here ( import or otherwise for another 4 months ) ..:(( and it's me who gets to choose them ..

Jake or jatar_k maybe as you're as admins .. you can give us the stats record for this increase in hits to this thread ..

Some folks might might like a record of them if ever they decide to formally present their new CV when they get tired of their present employment ;))

Hold the cantaloupe like you are going to make a two handed pass and with the stem end away from you. Press down gently with your thumbs, if it gives but isn't too squishy then it will be perfect.

I asked my wife if she could pick a good cantaloupe and she said "I dont like cantaloupe". Oh well, you cant have it all. But ask her about catfish or fried ocra and she knows her southern food.

You want to look for a few things when choosing melons

It should be heavy for it's size (you may have to try more then one)

As noted above it should be firm but not hard or too squishy

It should have a pleasant slight mild fruity odor or no odor at all

Bigger is not always better
