Then he says on Dasher, on Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, on Comet, on Cupid, Donner and Blitzen
After spending the better part of Sunday trying to uninstall and reinstall my anti-virus protection, I feel that all 12 days of Christmas must have already passed.
The day started like any other, I awoke, groaned and went back to sleep. Eventually I made my way to the nerve center, PC Central. There I tried again to update my virus definitions, and like every other thyme over the past week I was denied. The error message symtoms seemed severe. It wasn't going to get any better when I was told I had to use IE. Visions of the Dancer virus filled my head.
An efficient tech calmly guided me to various pages, and I managed to assemble an array of programs and other files. Most of the day was spent in way that I can only define as insanity, doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. To complicate things a ghost from the past made an appearance. Now I don't know about you, but I call this underhanded... we purchased our product online, and the next day unknown to me we cancelled the purchase and were refunded the full amount! Sneaky underhanded b@$%*^&! Anyway, I resolved that by making the required purchase, and downloaded the newest version this morning. Problems solved... until the installation failed.
Thru the afternoon and well into the evening I attempted to remove and install the software. What was that sound on the roof? There were more reboots than I could count, and at least one system hang and power shut down. Finally, just after 10 pm tonight, everything started to install. With pen and paper I intended to document the progress. This list was going to get checked twice! True to form there was a failure during the installation, but this time the installation completed and declared itself a success. One more reboot was required.
Success! Almost. Rudolph, where is your light tonight? Another call to tech support, only the second all day, with my list in hand, and I received a critical update file to run from my desktop. Right now a full system scan is underway, and after that there will certainly be another reboot required. It's going to take a while, so some cookies and milk sounds like a good idea right now.
I feel like a partridge in a pear tree. Merry Christmas.
I don't wade into my windows partition much, it's mostly for debugging for ie, and I haven't had much ie debugging to do in the last year or so (I make something that's not in the category of "public site," so I can stipulate which ua I want to use. So nice not to have to debug for ie!). Anyways, it'd been a very, very long time since I had done any updates, and I ended up rebooting and rebooting with new updates, finally getting that huge SP2 thing. Also noticed that my virus protection proggie said that it's database was "up to date," and actually refused to update itself - even though the db was more than a year old. Will probably have to dl a new antivirus then.
Systems that don't have many problems with viruses are very easy to install and use these days. I really hate tinkering around with my OS, and I actually feel I've tinkered a lot less with my OS since I've been on Ubuntu.
Wish everyone a bug & virus free new year.
Hopefully it was just the motherboard, and that the drives are still good.
