In 1989 I bought all this for $1,789.00

AT-Turbo-286 12MHZ
80286 zero wait state motherboard
640K Ram
Socket for math coprocessor
42 Meg Hard Drive - autoparking!
1:1 controller
Paradise VGA System (640x480)
14" VGA Monitor

and it was 100% IBM compatible!

I thought I got the deal of the century because my in-laws paid $3,000 for their used IBM XT which had a 10 Meg drive.

My ZX80 I recall being £99.

The VIC-20 that followed I think was £299 (got one as soon as launched in the UK).

The 16k RAM pack for the V20 I bought a couple of months later was £79 :-)

My father bought our first computer around 1986. It was an IBM PC XT. Here are the stats for it: 8088 processor @ 4.7 Mhz, + an 8087 math co-processor, 640k of RAM, and something like 4 or 10mb HDD. My dad paid $5,000 for it! This was the machine that inspired my love for computers. I learned so much about how computers worked when my dad bought this. The thing that inspired me most was the fact that after I got home from school, if I messed it up, I only had a few sweaty hours to figure out what I had done and correct it before my dad got home from work. I learned a LOT about computers in a very short time!
