Web server in space?

Is there a Web server/standard UNIX shell account running in space? Either in a satellite orbiting Earth, or... I don't know what else could be running one. Maybe the boxes on Mars.

It's just a crazy thought I came to think of. I'd sure like to have a shell account on it... ;-)

PS: They must be scared like hell to kernel upgrade and reboot... It's VERY remote! ;)

I would hazzard a guess that quite a few sattelite OS's are based on it, although heavily customised I'm sure.

Total guess though. Interesting question. I wonder how many up there are running Windows?

;-)

I found a little info on a modular system called chipSAT:-

CHIPSat is made up of twelve small hardware modules about the size of a double deck of playing cards. CHIPSat introduces SpaceDev's modular, Internet-based Microsatellite Operating System, which is SpaceDev's de facto industry standard portable operating system for the burgeoning new microsatellite industry. SpaceDev intends to bundle its satellite operating system, mission control software and flight computer as a commercial, off-the-shelf product. The SpaceDev Microsatellite Operating System will be a separate product, and operates on a wide variety of commonly available microprocessors.

From a private satellite company Press Release here:-

I would bet it's based on something (Unix probably) though.

You wouldn't put a brand new untested OS up in space would you?

Difficult one to search due to Toshiba naming one of their laptop ranges the "Satellite" range....

It would be crazy to have them connected to the "regular" Internet. I guess all the IP-packets going to these satellites are "hand-screened" :-)

I heard they used to have one running Windows, but it choked on an automatic update.

Total fiction on my part - personally I've never even heard what OS sattelites run most often, though I'd have to agree its almost certainly a customized and stripped-down Unix variant.
