I silly as it sounds he was one of the reasons I joined the Navy and worked in engineering.

Scotty has finally been beamed up.

I love the part in one of the movies where they go back in time to the 80s and he picks up the mouse and speaks into it saying "computer" and gets no response.

He then goes on to click at the keyboard to "invent" transparent aluminum or some such nonsense. Gee, those were the days...

A few weeks ago I bought my first flash memory "drive" -- really a stick about two inches long, with a 1 GB capacity. The first thing I thought when I snapped it onto the end of my keyboard was that the world of Star Trek had partly arrived: it was just like the little memory blocks they used to insert into the ship's computer.

Scotty's exploits as the redoubtable Chief Engineer aboard the Enterprise inspired many students to pursue a career in engineering. Because of this the Milwaukee School of Engineering granted Doohan an honorary degree in engineering. He was immortalised with a star in Hollywood's Walk of Fame on August 31, 2004.

I heard today that he was in our (Canadian) Army in WWII and landed on Juno beach on D-Day. He lost a finger in the battle.

> He lost a finger in the battle.

More than that, he was machine-gunned & was hit 6 times: Four bullets tore through his (right?) leg, and one took off his right middle finger. (Good luck on seeing that missing finger; a conscious decision has the missing digit hidden from sight in the Star Trek franchise.)

Oh, that sixth bullet? He took it in the chest.

But!, it was stopped by his silver cigarette case.

And they say that smoking kills... ;)

(Re: "He's dead, Jim." HA! Nice to see some irreverent humour! I guess Scotty just "coonna take no moorrr, Cap'n!")
