Have you checked the Device Manager (click on Start, click on Control Panel, click on System, click on Hardware, click on Device Manager).

I went in there....but what am I looking for? I plugged in a 512 sandisk cruzer when i was on that page, and it reset (obviously recognizing it). the green light went on in the device (for a split second). i go to 'my computer' to look for the drive. not there. no printers, drives, or anything are working on this computer all of the sudden. i have no clue. it's not registering.
what to do?

Click on the + sign next to Universal Serial Bus controllers. If you see an exclamation mark anywhere, right click on it and select 'enable'.
