When people ask what you do for a living?

How do you sex it up. I say I earn money from promoting goods on web sites - when you start talking about affiliate marketing the normal person gets lost - equally with the term webmaster.

Any ideas?

I just say web developer and leave it at that. Even my wife's eyes begin to glaze over if you try to explain it. The only thing they hear is "oh, he's a computer guy." They promptly hit me up several weeks later and try to get me to "fix their computer," the real task being "set me up so I can do online gaming or steal copyrighted material via peer to peer networks." :D

I used to help, but now I shrug like the village idiot.

So yeah. Web developer. :-)

Funnny thing I was explain aff marketing to a close relative who looked at me and said 'but why would they pay to that?'.

I guess it was lost on her.

I'm in the same position as you, Rocknbil. They ask me what I do, I say "software tech support" and they then start to tell me all the problems they're having with their computers, and expect me to come out with an instant answer.

It's a bit like doctors I suppose - they get fed up with people telling them all their ailments as soon as they find out they're in the medical profession.

I try and think of a new job title each time someone asks me... usually based on a small part of what I do: consultant, photographer, web designer, designer, 'i'm in marketing', search engine optimizer (always gets a raised eyebrow), 'i'm in computers', ... the list goes on... I suppose the most honest answer I came up with is 'I get websites busy'...

Web designer works, but can be dangerous if they decide they want a web site. Internet marketing is good.

To people who I think are a bit tech savvy, I say web developer. To everyone else, I say "I look after such-and-such website". Most people seem to understand that.

"sex it up"?

I'm simple and straight forward, don't like to brag or boast because that can make people think you're full of something smelly.

I don’t like to brag, so I just tell people I am unemployed.
