This is it! I finally found her! You know the one with a spare tire behind [zapzap.it], and springs under the seats?

Yes, she is tad older than me, needs some major surgery, a paint job and some chrome plating, but I bet she will be road inspected and approved next spring.

She will be pale pastel blue and white.

I want a name for this rare Italian beauty, any suggestion?

Loverly.

Might I suggest:

Giulietta (dei Capuleti)

Isn't there a law that men are only allowed to drive such vehicles when accompanied by a lady, skirt hiked, bare legs flashing, riding sidesaddle behind? At least that is what I remember from the movies.

I would suggest Sexton, named after one of my favorite poets.

BTW, is that a fellow wearing high heels in that pic?

I think he's wearing a skirt as well...

What about:

* Ekberg - after Anita Ekberg in La Dolce Vita (and who rides away from the paparazzi on a Vespa)
* Bontempo - after Graziella Bontempo, the first Miss Vespa (1949)
* D'Ascanio - after the designer of the Vespa, Corradino D'Ascanio
* Paperino - the original name for the Vespa (you can find out the meaning of this one...)

I have a very small but wonderful collection of slides from Piaggio's archives, sent to me about 10 years ago by the Vespa brand manager in Italy and which include John Wayne sitting aside a Vespa (taken on the set of "The Quiet Man"), and Charlton Heston on one whilst in the garb of Ben Hur.

Vespizzatevi!

Giulietta (dei Capuleti)

Good idea for an icon, but I wish for something less dramatic with a happy ending. :)

Yeah but it was amended since. They dont need to be bare legs anymore, fishnet stockings are allowed.

Sexton

Anne Sexton?

No thanks. I want something joyfull. It will be very similar to this one [pluesch.at] after I restore her (the bike, look at the bike).

Ekberg

Ho là là! [cinegor.granadaenlared.com]

Herrr, good idea but I want to restore the bike as an original, no mod job. :)

Bontempo

This name sounds very, very good. I like it!

Hey Syzygy, you live in London right? Scooter mod jobs are still a rage out there?
I saw some really crazy stuff [freewebz.com] a while back. Is it still on?

troels, troels, troels. I ow you my bicycle name and I am really gratefull for it. You got my mom shake her head when I told her about it. :)

Frankly, I think Beatrice is a tad too dramatic.

I want some name wich will make her forget she's 51 years old. Something childish like toys or jelly beans... see?

Bontempo sounds like "good time", I like it. I guess it's hard to find better...

Really Essex_boy?

By the looks of the 'gem' I picked, I think I am going to need some help. Looks like it's been sleeping in a barn for over 40 years. I scraped pounds of pigeon guano from it before I could finally see the rust. :)

BTW, the French did some pretty crazy mod jobs [vintagescooters.free.fr], too. ;)

Hey Syzygy, you live in London right? Scooter mod jobs are still a rage out there?

Last Saturday I saw a 'mod job' scooter for the first time in a long while. Based on what I've seen over the last couple of years the trend appears to be towards renovating old Vespa's and Lambretta's back to their original condition, with original colour schemes and styling.

However, there is still the die-hard Mod element, dressing up their scooters with mirrors, and more lights than the Blackpool illuminations.

That is an interesting trend, Syzygy. Vespa is following it very closely. They issued 350 limited edition Vespa 150 PX for Canada this year. It looks quite the same as the one they produced in the late 70's and is available at no premium compared to current models.

Problem is, they cost half the price of an economy car! It's 10 times the price of what it was 25 years ago and at least 30 % higher than competition. Kind of thick for the cult scooter maker. No wonder people prefer to restore old ones.

That's expensive.

Perhaps there's something more affordable here [bizrate.lycos.com]?

;-)

All to soon the vespa will be called "That <snip> Scooter", especially if you're restoring yourself. I thought 'before next summer' with mine, and it was, 8 years later.

I think that the PX has been reintroduced into North America on the back of the stella (thats the LML Star in the UK I think) & bajaj selling well.

You do know that the pic you linked to isn't a GS?

>>You do know that the pic you linked to isn't a GS?

I do now. I recently bought this reck from a small ad and it read as such. Just after I brought it home, I just posted the first funny pic I could find for the fun of it, and give foo ites a rough idea. The head lamp is on the fender so it can't be a GS.

Last week end, I found out from the engine serial number it is a Vespa 125 Hoffmann, made in Germany in 1950.
I could not find the frame's serial number yet.

Bontempo will be ready for next spring, winters are long here. ;)
