Canadians laugh when they here someone say "ice hockey". Sure there are other types of hockey, but to use the term "ice hockey" sounds so wrong and uninformed. Call the orginal version just plain "hockey", and add a word describe what kind of hockey you were playing other than the real version.

Do you refer to what is going be played at the super bowl as "tackle football"? I mean if you don't say "tackle football" we may think they will play "touch football" or "flag football".

More... "road hockey" and "floor hockey".

That's American football, surely? It certainly isn't just "football". That's a different sport altogether, in which you have to control a ball with your feet.

There's underwater hockey as well. A most strange game. At one stage when I was using a gym attached to a public swimming pool I used to often watch it from the comfort of a spa pool.

The game where you control the ball with your feet is soccer. The real name of football is rugby union, (also known just as rugby and definately not to be confused with rugby league which is normally called league).

Shall we have a football war?

That my friend is a version of "table hockey". Best played in a suburban, wood paneled basement on a cold February day in Canada.

Isn't ice hockey what they used to play once in a while in that now defunct boxing league known as the NHL when everyone got to greedy?

My partner says his brother once played roller hockey. Ice hockey for those not blessed with ice I suppose.

In the interests of maximum international understanding, I propose we call it "Rugby for wimps who need extra pads."
