Free online "gathering" place

Need a place for family (genealogy related)

I have recently started some genealogy of my family and have managed to meet some distant cousins that share a similar interest. Is there a free place online that we can post, communicate, upload, file, etc. some of our findings? I would pay a small fee for it but my guess is that there is some free stuff that comes with advertising.
Any suggestions?

Why don't you host a message board for that purpose? Take collections from the rest of the family for the hosting fees and board software. That IS what family's for right? :-)

Seriously though, it would only take a few bucks a year from everyone to keep a **true** family forum running.

Free servers are generally overrun with pop-ups and ads, you may want to avoid that option if at all possible.

There are a couple of genealogy oriented sites with lots of stuff to offer, including some things that might help you out without a lot of ads OR money. If you do a search on google for genealogy, you'll get the best ones in the first five or so results....
