I DO remember being panic stricken (in private - my brother was a real little horror if he "knew something" like that about you....) by the floating things in the Macy's parades of the mid-50s.... as well as color movies like Snow White....
But then, the original Grimms' Fairy Tales didn't bother me at all....

Obviously the parents are using the time honoured trick to save money at crimbo time of telling the kids that the guy in the red costume is a dangerous psycho who wants to break into their house and creep about in the night. So the kids scream when they see him and never expect any gifts.
