No more butane lighters [seattlepi.nwsource.com]

"Smoke 'em if you've got 'em", matches only, please.

Maybe I am just missing something here, but what's the difference between allowing matches and not lighters. They both can start a fire, but I guess maybe it's because lighters can exploded

This would be the second time lighters were banned on US flights. The original TSA list included them.

Nope, I've heard rumours that they've found a way to eradicate the problems: no more passengers. ;)

"but what's the difference between allowing matches and not lighters"

No difference. Just those idiots try to shuffle things to make the sheeple feel safe.

Hmmm, guess I'll find out how serious this is on Sunday. Better bring a pack of matches in case. Trust me - after five hours without a cigarette, they will want me to have a way to light up after I land ;).

Butane lighters only? What about zippos? If it's only butane, it must be the 'explosive' angle.

zippos are already banned. I asked about that on the way to vegas. No zippos, even right now.

Depends on what kind of mood the security staff is in, I suppose.

Not to worry, pricey airport lighter kiosks will undoubtedly be startegically placed at smokers' lounge entrances.

I had a $100 cigar lighter taken from me in the Vegas airport. This was a year ago.

Hmmm - in Europe it's the other way around: no matches but lighters are ok....

In Europe you can still buy duty-free bottles of extra strong spirits just before boarding the flight.

Hmm, so not only are you taking aboard a deadly weapon -- you can smash the bottle to release highly flammable fluid while retaining a jaggedly sharp hunk of glass as a blade -- the government has given you a discount to purchase it.

Don't they know there's a war on?

Dorgan cited FBI reports that would-be "shoe-bomber" Richard Reid would have been able to ignite his explosive and blow up a trans-Atlantic jetliner three years ago if he'd brought a butane lighter with him.

So the FBI figured he couldn't ignite his explosive with matches? Sometimes I really wonder how people get paid for coming up with this stuff. And they are getting paid with your tax money

Just a gentle reminder that we don't want this thread to take on a political slant.

They let me take my bic lighter on no problem to and from Chicago this past week - and I even had the complete security run through (my tickets keep getting flagged lately).

Yeah, that and the fact that he tried to light them in plain sight of the crew and other passengers. ;)

That's a good point.

Why on earth didn't he go to the toilet cubicle, where no-one could have attempted to stop him and where he would have had the luxury of going through as many matches as he needed to before the fuse lit?
