What a name for a lake! Story here [timesargus.com].

Can you imagine growing up around there, having to pronounce Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg at a young age? ;)

I've never been there, but I have been to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch [llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.com] - which is just as good a name! Still unable to correctly pronounce it, though! ;)

Hey, do you suppose a Moderator could reduce the Title of this thread's width? You know, take out some of those 'extra' letters?

What is the point of using so much of the boards width?

So you're the guy who's still browsing at 320 x 240?

I never realised that WW had that facility for PDA's - brilliant!

Can I get that on my WAP phone?

"Krungthep mahanakorn amorn ratanakosindra ayuthaya mahadirokphop nopharatana rachathanee burirom udomrachanivet mahasthan amorn pimarn avatarn sathit sakkatuttiya vishnukarm prasit"

Which means the City of Angels, better kmown as Bangkok.

Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg
My father must have had a sick sense of humor...made me memorize how to pronounce that at a very young age. It's a pretty lake.

So you actually know how to pronounce that? I think I can figure it out too, but tell me, what syllables are emphasized? Want to make sure I get this just right?

Can you also spell it correctly from memory? ;)

Are you supposed to yell out the name if you fall into it? I suppose it's the sort of sound you'd make involuntarily anyway :)

There are a couple of spellings if I recall. It's an old native American word so I think it's done phonetically anyway.

So you actually know how to pronounce that?
Yeah, it's got kind of a beat/rhythm to it which you can remember it by.

Char-gog-ga-gogg-
man-chaug-ga-gogg-
chau-bun-a-gunga-maugg

Without hearing it I guess it must look strange. I learned it by ear long before I ever actually saw it spelled out.

Thanks for that - I had no idea there was a PDA version - that'll save me a few kb's from my phone bill!

You could try:
Taumata whakatangi hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku pokai whenua kitanatahu

"The brow of the hill where Tamatea, with the bony knees, who slid and climbed mountains, the great traveller, sat and played on the flute to his beloved."

I don't know anyone who has been there.

I have been to "Kappiskwassanicagikelly", a village in Northern Quebec. It means "the pit of fish and cheese"

I grew up in a town in Suffolk called HAVERHILL, it means in old english 'Pit of despair with high unemployment and amazing levels of teenage pregancies low literacy for teenagers leaving school and high crime, brought about by drug abuse. With amazing futuristic views over an industrial landscape'

Its even listed in the Domesday book as such.
