Looks like the UK will finally be getting some *really* quick broadband connections - 8Mb for 40 quid a month.

Sadly, it's not until early next year, and it'll only be on 230 exchanges in the entire country. Hmm...

There's a story about it at The Register:

That's great news. About time we had something to compete with the US ;-)

We brits get left out in the cold on stuff like this usually!

Anyway, 230 exchanges is not great but it's a start, and if they make the economics work, more will follow.

And early next year is not all that far away...

Is there something unique in the UK tele infrastructure that allows for such high speeds? (I used to think my Midwest US 1.2Mb download was fast)

No, standard POTS copper cable is more than capable of 8mb and beyond, but bear in mind our ADSL is usually contended from between 20:1 up to 50:1.

At £40 per month, it's like to be 50:1 plus.

Jon_King,
Have you looked into cable? Here in springpatch we have 3 down 1.5 up. Not sure if the providers in louie offer that tho.

Hmmm, a 3meg cablemodem doesn't do me any good when it's the fastest link in a broken chain...
