Copy of thread from another forum I frequent. I need to get some help in getting this computer up:

Over the last weekend my wife bought at a garage sale a Compaq Prosignia 500 and a NEC monitor and alot more goodies all for $10.00, WOW but now after turning the big beast on what I have on the monitor is "Configuration Nonvolatile Memory Invalid Initialization Aborted" and what follows on the same screen is the press "F1" key to continue or "F10" key for System Utilities, when pressing F1 you get Invalid partition table, F10 you get The System Utilities are not available on this system Press any key to continue which brings you to: Invalid partition table.

Realizing the guy she bought it from said it doesn't have any memory, but didn't go into what exactly that meant, no physical memory? I am thinking that at this moment. The only thing that registers when starting it is:

"147456kb" Detected, somewhere at 150mb

1. Processor running at 150mhz
2. 172-EISA Configuration Nonvolatile Memory Invalid Initialization Aborted and then the following:

SCSI Devise Detected - System Board, SCSI ID 0: DPES-
SCSI Devise Detected - System Board, SCSI ID 1: FUJITSU- m2954S-512
SCSI Devise Detected - System Board, SCSI ID 2: COMPAQ- ST32550N
SCSI Devise Detected - System Board, SCSI ID 3: COMPAQ- DPES-31080
SCSI Devise Detected - System Board, SCSI ID 4: ARCHIVE- 4326XX 27871 XXX
SCSI Devise Detected - System Board, SCSI ID 5: COMPAQ CRD-254V

So can anyone give me some advise as to what I have, and what I can do as far as getting it to work or do I have to go to the shop? Hoping "NOT".

( added at 4:20am Sun/31st/10/04 ): Also I have been to the hp/compaq forum and found the Configuration Utility but have not been successfull in downloading from their site for some reason, would anyone have another link besides the hp/compaq one. I have done a google and cannot find another site that offers this download, and would someone be kind enough to explain what is a "Prosignia 500" and can I put a Windows OS into it?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com], The_Watchman.

When you bought the thing for $10, did the guy say anything about someone having played around with the wiring? I've seen this kind of thing when someone has unplugged stuff like the floppy or hard drives and put the wires back in wrong.

Does the floppy drive light or the CD light fire up when you try to boot? Open up the case and check everything - unplug each component one by one and see if aything looks amiss.

For installing Windows once (or if) you can get it to boot, all PCs can run Windows. I don't know the particular model, but I have a Compaq Deskpro which runs at 166MHz (similar to your 150MHz) and it runs Windows NT 4.0 perfectly, and should be able to run Windows 98 too.

Yup - I have win98SE running on an IBM ThinkPad 150mhz. Works great....

I would second the "wiring screwed" scenario. If you can get that stuff worked out, you've probably got a decent machine once you format the drive and reload stuff.

I know a guy who used to work for Compaq pre-HP merger. I'll send him the error msg you posted, and see what he thinks it might be....

[Edit: hmm, rereading.... it actually MIGHT be that there's no RAM sticks in there. You need to look on the mainboard to see if there's any RAM there at all. You should be able to find a diagram of the mainboard on the Compaq support site; that would show you where the RAM SHOULD be. As to why you can't download stuff, I haven't a clue - I don't DO Compaq any more....]

It's been awhile since I have been on to answer some questions regarding my Prosignia 500. Yes the floppy drive light will go on. One interesting thing is on the face of the tower there seems to be a 2' x 5'(roughly)space that something has been removed, now this is what? I would say like a bay for some extention add on. Unless this is what the guy my wife bought it from meant by it doesn't have any memory?

What exactly is this that I have? It is gigatic compared to my new hp. And resemble's what a server might look like(guessing). In the first post it says there is approx 150mb being interpreted on start up. And then the list of SCSI's. At hp/website they offered something known as a Configuration Utility for download. Downloaded on my hp and then copied to 4 floppy's which afterwards say's will configure the Prosignia to boot.

Seems I have yet another cog in this wheel, noticing when using windows explorer in the tools tab and then folder options then clicking file types looking at my regestered extentions, apparently on URL:File Transfe Protocol there is no known extention it reads in brackets [NONE]as well the URL:CallTo Protocol and a list of other Protocols all having this [NONE] for extention.

While highlighting the URL:File Transfer Protocol and clicking the advanced tab (where you can edit the file type)in the Actions: says open and underneath that the Confirm open after download button is on and the Always show extention is also on. Someone on Lockergnome suggested me having a look to see what the extentions where for the FTP. I haven't received any further info from them (have been a member on there for 1yr now)
The short of it is does the extention have something to do with why I cannot download via ftp on the hp/website? I already contacted hp and they want me to recreate exactly what happened, which if I don't find out something about this FTP business and why I can't download from there site this Configuration Utility. I will never get this Prosignia to fire up.

I am just asking some simple question's here. If anyone has any knowledge of what I have explained would you please reply with some information regarding my problem please?

1.What does the extention have to do with URL:File Transfer Protocol and how do I get or put an extention for it?

2.Is what I have here (Prosignia 500)a server or just a computer waiting to be fixed with a simple download from the hp/website after I configure what is wrong with my FTP extention or what ever the problem?

3.The 2' x 5' empty cargo bay, what can this signify (a hardryve removed?)and if it is not what is it that has apparently been removed leaving this 2' x 5' opening at the top of this tower, location right under the floppy bay?

Someone with some professional advise would really be what I need to look into this post. I would think a website forum the size of this one with as many forums and rich features would have adequate personale to interpret the problem that is mind boggling me to death here.

Appreciate all who replied so far to my ongoing problem, Thx's everyone,
