ADSL connection keeps failing

Is it the ISP or my hardware?

My ADSL connection keeps failing. I suspect the ISP is cutting it off when I hit a bandwidth limit. I have 3 applications running that automatically update and collect files online e.g. I FTP collect updates from my customers sites. The cut-off only seems to happen when my systems have been busy. My ISP said I should return my wireless router to factory settings but it took me ages to setup. Has anyone heard of UK ISPs cutting off connection at a certain threshold? Or am I paranoid? :)

Many isp's in the UK are, sadly, operating with restrictions for home users. On business accounts there should be no problem, however, you need to go back to the terms & conditions of the account and determine if any sneaky restrictions do indeed apply.

I've just signed up for broadband at home with onetel. Today the modem arrived in the post - it's not compatible with my OS (which is typical of this particular isp...)!

Not sure if that actually helps, but at least now you know people are reading the threads here..;-)

Actually, in various places there are restrictions depending on your stated "usage" when you sign the contract: if you "fudge" and say "home user" when you are intending "business", you are contravening the TOS and the agreements/contracts you sign when you subscribe. I don't know of course if your agreement, kapow, included that sort of verbiage, but if it did you may discover that there are certain limits in bandwidth and other usage which will alert your provider to a major difference between a stated "home user" and an actual "business user".

Thanks for the responses. I think I should check the Ts&Cs and ask some direct questions of the ISP.

Hey Syzygy - I feel a bit smug for actually knowing what your name means :)

Hope that you manage to get the problem sorted out.

Nice one kapow! Mind you, that depends on which definition [dictionary.reference.com] you had in mind...lol

although, I must point out that there is actually a rarer usage of the word not provided in the link..

I use BT home network and it is God Awful. Not a day goes past when it doesn't fail at some point for an hour or three.
