Is the term 'Yanks' offensive to you Americans?

Pejorative, or not?

Just curious - does anyone across the pond from me (I'm in England), dislike this word? I'm sure I remember that some of you used to (and I mean a long time after the Civil War!).

When Southerners use the word "Yankee", it has absolutely nothing to do with the Civil War!

And it really isn't ususally used as an insult; it just explains behavior that would be unacceptable otherwise.

Why won't you call my sweet grandma "Ms. Millie" like everybody else does, and why don't you say "Yes, ma'am" to her (instead of "uh-huh")? Is it because you're rude? Not really; it's just that you're a Yankee (you don't know any better). So, you're off the hook, but if you stay around here for long, folks will expect that even a Yankee will learn to show respect for his elders, or you can go on back home. (Otherwise you'll become known as a "Damn Yankee".)
