Very sad.

A "mediocre" actor at best, but an inspirational human being.

Best thing he was in (IMHO) wasn't the Superman movies but "Noises Off". Hilarious movie.

I first heard about this yesterday morning watching the Today show. Katie Couric was interviewing him, and I'm sitting there listening to what he's saying and marvelling at his ability to stay so upbeat given his condition, then they cut to a very different looking Katie Couric who says he just died at the age of 52. I was stunned. And with his research funding bill almost through Congress...a real shame.

This may sound terrible, but I am glad that his body finally let him go. I had a cousin who broke his neck (All-star athlete and 17) and it was terrible to watch what had been a very vibrant young man. Christopher Reeves was simaler. May angels walk gladly with him.

We have a very good friend who is paraplegic (actually, he's semi-quad, his upper extremities don't fully work/have feeling either) after a bicycle accident several years ago. He's in a wheelchair.

I've only known him in a wheelchair - we met him and his wife a few years after the accident.

Although he's got some frustrations, on observation I'd say his life is pretty good. He takes his youngest daughter to her soccer games, he does volunteer work, he goes out drinking with us, he loves his wife, and he's a hoot to hang out with.

To me, it's sad when people have accidents and their bodies aren't the same - but I'm glad that folks like our friend and Christopher Reeve have/had the gumption to keep on going. I'm sure Chris Reeve was an inspiration to those around him, just like our friend is to us.

It was a sad day for us, hearing that Chris Reeve died - it was especially hard for our wheelchair-bound friend. Lives are surely shortened with that kind of traumatic injury - but Chris Reeve went way too soon on what seems to be some probable negligence. It stinks that he's gone.
