Canadian submarine in distress...

...sold a dud by Royal Navy?

The Chicoutimi was originally built for the Royal Navy, when it was known as HMS Upholder.

It was bought by the Canadian Navy, where it is now one of four Victoria Class long-range patrol submarines. It was renamed and formally handed over to its new owners during a ceremony at Faslane on Saturday.

Whilst thankfully no one was seriously injured in the accident - the result of an electrical fire - one wonders if the personnel at the Faslane submarine base would not be better employed in selling used car sales...

No offence meant to anyone in the Used Car business, of course, but the image of a certain Arthur Daly does spring to mind in this instance..;-)

Hey, that's only one small part of the story. One of the earlier submarines turned up with a large dent on the side that no-one could explain. They were all broken to a greater or lesser extent, and I'm not aware that any one of them is in service yet.

It's a total joke - at least no-one was injured. If I owned a car dealership, I'd hire those salesmen who managed to offload that heap of rust on the spot.

From Fark when they reported this story:

In other news, Canada has submarines.

<ducks> ;)

I heard the Canadian Navy were bidding for an aircraft carrier on E-Bay!

Oh, good God. Not all the "Canada has got a Navy?" gags...

I wonder how many of you might recall Satirewire from a few years ago? This article [satirewire.com] is from Feb 2002...

This piece of news has got to be the most embarrassing piece of all time, read between the lines.

England couldnt afford to maintain her Subs and sold them in poor condition to a long standing friend who trusted her to sell only quality naval equipment.

Its a national disgrace, whats next?

Selling rotting food to starving Africans?

Sadly, one of the crew members of the stricken sub has died.

So, what was intended to be a slightly humourous thread, based on the news at the time, should close.

At the end of WW2 Canada had one of the largest navies in the world, I think we ranked 3 or 4, I forget. Long time since those University history classes.
Tragic story, the poor sailor who died had a wife and kids. There was a moment of silence in parliment yesterday.
All four of those subs we bought had problems, very bad deal.

I'm Canadian, so I can say this. Essex_Boy, it's not what England sells us that upsets or makes me mad, it's the fact that Canada buys this crap! Canada's military/navy/airforce/army is in shambles. It's amazing what they can do with what they've been given. The Canadian government ought to be ashamed...
