I get it here and it is half the size of the Smart Media Cards? So I contact Olympus to make sure this is going to work. They assure me it will. I open the package and can't get the darned thing to go in the slot. (It is about half the size and about a third again as thick as the Smart Cards I'm used to.)
Has anyone else had this problem? I don't want to force the thing and ruin the card or my camera.
Olympus just keeps referring me to my manual ... which says absolutely nothing about the xD card other than yes, it is supposed to be compatable. There are no camera stores here, so I am stuck!
Any photogs out there with experience? Help! :(
Slide back the hinge for the memory card. Look at the diagram there. On my camera it shows a diagram where the XD card goes.
I use both a smart media and an XD card all the time. Both work great in this camera.
Thanks a lot! I have pretty poor eyesight, but with the help of a magnifying glass I was able to see what you are talking about. I managed to get it slid in, but now the darned thing is telling me there's no card! :(
This isn't good at all. I really need my camera for work and now I cna't even get the thing out. I am going to have to use pliers just to get a grip on the stupid thing.
Any advice? We don't have a camera store on the island ... so I am pretty much scr***d if I can't get this sorted out myself.
Its not like I shoved it in either. I just slid it in. When it said no card the first time, i pushed it in a little further in, still nothing. I pushed a little farther thinking it would pop out like the smart card does. No such luck. This sucks!
You didn't insert it up side down did you? There should be minimal force to put the card in. If it isn't going in, then you are probably have it the wrong way.
Have my camera next to me as I type this.
On my XD card there is a gold arrow, indicating that it is the front of the card. On the camera (use that magnifying glass) there is the same picture. Line the two up. For me, this means that the gold arrow is pointing down into the slot (the direction of the arrow) with the front of the card being on the same side as the LCD panel (or opposite to the lens if you prefer). The gold contacts are towards the lens.
You have to push it in until it clicks and then release it. It should pop back up slightly. To remove it, push it down and that will release it.
If all else fails, consult the manual - or find a nimble finger child!
No ... I didn't insert it upside down or backwards. It just got stuck.
This afternoon, I took it to a photographer friend of mine and because I was desperate, he said ... "I can try to fix it for you, but if it doesn't work, it may make the camera worthless and I don't want to be held responsible."
I told him to go for it. I absolutely have to have my camera working this Wednesday and I need much more memory capability than what I currently have. So ... if I need a new camera, I will have to go to St. Thomas on Monday. I have no time to dick around! I need to either have it fixed or toss it!
Anyway ... he took some little tool he had and inserted it into the mouth of the card slot and moved it back and forth. He then took the xD card, slid it in and took three shots! It is working fine and the picture quality is excellent.
I am thoroughly disgusted with Olympus' Customer Service. Lots of backing and forthing and telling me to "read my manual". Well what the hell did they think I had been doing when it didn't work in the first place?
What he did amounted to something similar to regapping a spark plug and it took him less than a minute. All of a sudden, everything is working just fine and my plans for this week are back on track!

It is great out in the open during the day but struggles a bit underlights. I try to take a lot of photos of sporting events under lights but still haven't found the best setting as yet.
Anyone got any hints? I am trying to take photos of baseball/ fastpitch softball.
