Can't say I've heard of it, but the amount of marketing drivel on the product description page is amazing. Talking about "military-level" and "Department of Defense standards" is totally and utterly meaningless.

Also, there is no clear information about how the program actually works. It mentions: "Both editions of GhostSurf provide an anonymous, encrypted Internet connection" - I believe that means that they are providing an anonymiser-type service through proxy servers, but they are encrypted in what way? Where does this layer of encryption start and end?

From what I can gather, it uses lists of "anonymous" proxies, updated daily, but not proxies controlled by them. So in reality, you can't be sure that the proxy server you are connecting through is genuinely anonymous (and not sniffing every keystroke of your traffic). Most anonymous proxies are unintentional on the part of the server's owner, and they get shut down within a few days: it is questionable whether your use of their resources is legal, and it is rarely ethical.

Finally, PestPatrol considers GhostSurf to be spyware - it may be an error on their part, however.

<added>Reading through their knowledge base, it appears that they do absolutely no encryption whatsoever - despite what the marketing drivel says on the product page.</added>

Hi encylo -

Thanks. Downloaded but didn't install, read some stuff elsewhere that made me iffy on it, and your take means I absolutely won't install it....

Take care....

If you want to surf anonymously then I would reccomend a certain service which just as I was typing now I realise the mods wouldn't want me promoting. PM me.

Hey, encyclo, those are some great pointers for anyone evaluating any sort of anonymizing software. Thanks!
