Every now and then I get some time away from the computer, the noise, the distractions; and head out to a nice spot in the country.

note: not as far as the boonies, outback, or sticks

There's still work to be done, some if it hard. But there's much more time to do things I really enjoy.

Cribbage - a game I've been playing since I was 5. I'll be getting a chance once again to pair up the best player I've found in all of Idaho, and last year she stunk ;) I'm hoping to be able to get a away a few days early, just so we can have a couple of quiet evenings playing, before all the hoopla begins.

Drumming - One of regular social activities where I'm headed is drumming and dancing around a blazing fire, often until the first light of day. There just aren't enough people to keep it sustained for days at a time.. alas. It's still quite a bit of fun. I'll be there with El Dento. I fell in love with El Dento at first sight, from clear across the room. I don't think I even touched another drum in that day. After a trade for my bongos, and a small amount of cash, that silver doumbeck was mine - my only prize posession.

2 more weekends....

Well, here's to the never-ending thread that never should have been... :0

I met a few more cribbage players, and I met my match. In a word, Phew!

I got a new drum! I worked a nice trade for a steel doumbek I was carrying around, and got myself a djembe - finally. It's made from mahagony and has a 9-10 inch head. Now is time to start learning some basic african rhythms.

And, I brought home a cold someone was carrying around :(
It didn't show up until after I returned; this morning was kinda rough...

grandpa, aside from the late 50s Gibson that my first husband played (and was VERY good on, but wanted to be the next Bob Dylan instead and wasn't up for it, and which I did NOT get when we divorced), the djembe that he won in a poker game on board the USS Ticonderoga off the Viet Nam coast in 1967 was the other "prime article"....

I didn't get it either. Contrariwise, he wound up with ALL of my Kingston Trio and Brothers Four albums (yeah, I mean like, RECORDS, man....)

Edit, added: Ummm. Don't know how you'd view basic "trash romance" for reading material, but I have a book by Jayne Anne Krentz which has some TRULY HILARIOUS scenes in a northwest coast inn where a group of "manly men" are getting in touch with their "inner male" by sitting around naked, drumming and chanting. Needless to say the innkeeper (the heroine) bursts in upon this "get together/group touchy-feely" against the advice of the hero.... As far as literature including drums goes, it's probably the single comedic scene I've ever run across.... I find it still hysterically funny.... I've probably read the book 4 or 5 times....

I wonder I've met any of those type "manly men" here in the northwest... something tells me I have.

I got in touch with my feelings already with this drum, the feeling of pain. I pulled a second row of diamonds around it (tightened the drum head) and until I figured out how, I was just ripping skin off my fingers. But she sounds so sweet now. I've decided to name my djembe Cricket, and she has her own namesake rythym too.

:)
