After having a couple year position with a mom and pop store as a webguy and getting canned (due to only their myopia) I became irritated. I got a j.o.b. (desktop publishing, QuarkExpress) that was tangential to webdesign and worked like the devil on building my skills and portfolio at night and on the weekends all the while doubting my skills, not knowing for SURE that I was cut out to be in that field. Thinking that maybe the stint I had as webmaster was a fluke and I should just return to the manual labor on the factory production floor. Not long ago all this came to fruition as I was offered a position as "Director of New Media" for twice my current salary.

The thing is that now I am under so much stress to get out of lease, get moved, get settled etc, in addition to a job that will give new meaning to the term a "Challenging job". My stomach turns into knots at the very thought of my first day there. So thanks allot webmasterworld!

Personally, I'd like to know how you got the mom-n-pop outfit to fire you. I figure that's exactly what I need to motivate myself to get off my lazy behind and start developing an independent income, but I've tried everything: taking 3 month vacations, cutting my own hours and asking for a raise, doing freelance work on my lunch break, spending half the day on forums like this one... nothing's worked yet.

For me all it took was trying to expand the site to new frontiers outside of one of the co-owner's (the one that was previously doing it) skill set.

Independent income is one of the other things I have been working on (and hope to continue) Since I have been in the current job. Figuring "well if I can't find a real job, I will just create my own" Taking my portfolio site and expanding it with additional information tangential to my preoccupation. Adsence truly is a wonderful, if maybe a bit scary, thing.

There is no replacement for knowledge and passion.

Why not invite an unemployed friend who has great people and technical skills up for a couple of weeks. Introduce them to your boss and then maybe, I dunno, puke on your boss's shoes.

Hm, finding my own replacement and then puking on the boss's shoes... That might work. ;) Dunno about the hard rocker's wet dream idea though. (Although, if I did it might induce the nausea necessary to mess the boss's shoes!)
