Brett and I brought home a new cat a few weeks ago and we're still getting to know her quirks. She's one of those on-top-of-or-inside-everything cats. Every day I find her in a new place (she was in my file drawer yesterday) - and today she learned how to open the cabinets in the kitchen. Wish I had a video camera to follow her around with when she's exporing. She's a hoot.
She's a "container kitty". Basket, boxes, tubs, planter, buckets.... doesn't matter, if it's even MARGINALLY empty, she's in it.... I'd guess she's about 3 now, but "kitten" exemplifies her state of mind (um. She loses screws all over the house on a regular basis too.... bouncing off walls and doors, jungle-gyming in the oak chairs....) As you said, she's a hoot!
Here's a pic for you (she invented "lap-sitting" like this - thought it up all on her own....) [bytehaven.com...]
I've been owned by many cats in my life, but this one has to be the best one ever. Her name is Minx. And she is.
she was a stray
but this one has to be the best one ever
I have always maintained that a stray (9 out of 10 times) makes a better pet than the pedigree or gotten as a kitten/puppy pet.
My little kitty, Sicily, was a stray. Found her when I in college at a plant nursery. She was hiding behind a pot and scared my friend half to death b/c she has only half a tail, was scrawny-starved and round saucer eyes (city friend thought she was a bobcat). When I assured my friend she wasn't, the girl behind the counter assured us that her father was going to shoot the cat that afternoon. The cat went in my car, and promtly knocked herself out by trying to escape through the glass of the back hatch. We made friends though and she has been my constant companion.
I would swear up and down Sicily knew what was going to happen at that nursery, but she was starved and tired and had given up. Then I came along and changed it all. And she knows. The best darn cat, she is. (And I have other cats to prove it)
I saw the same thing when I was a kid and my mother saved all sorts of strays. And I will maintain to my dying day, a stray animal you take in will make a better pet than any pedigree or puppy/kitten you can find.
Only purebreds I've ever owned are the Brits we've had. Bird dogs are a whole other story.... it really IS "bred in the bone"....
I'd probably never buy a purebreed cat though. The "mis-bits" are wonderful animals in their own right, and there are SO MANY of them that need a home and love.
[Okay. I'm done now. This is one of those topics that sends me into floods of tears - and I need to be together and on the scanner right now because my husband is out firefighting again....
I DO wish the video had been smaller. I spent almost an hour earlier trying to download to view it, but on dial-up it's just almost impossible....]
The girl we just brought home is a one-eyed, half deaf old cat from a rescue group. And she's a sweetie - 100% sweetie. And 99% unadoptable, except by softies like us!
All of my cats have been rescues and they've all been the nicest, sweetest, lovingest cats on the planet.
Now I'm hoping they decide to leave the cat here. It's no longer "Opie" the cat, it's Mr. Wobbles. I don't even mind the cat footprints all over my car.

In another month, this place will look like Noah decided to stay here... Hard to say no to an animal in need.
Three black buzzards roost on the ledge of the one-lane bridge on our road. Larry, Curly and Moe. Spooky site at night, but of course, they're waiting for someone to hit a possum or a raccoon and they don't seem to know they look spooky. They've caused more than one accident as three large buzzards flying across your windshield while you're navigating a hairpin curve bridge can be a little distracting. I'll try to get a video.
My whole family prepared for the loss of our childhood friend. But on the day of the appointment my dad died of a sudden unexpected heart attack.
Some of us now refer to that day as the day Missus took Dad with her.
