MAC help needed

I have a MR814 router for my wireless network that has a desktop and PDA hooked up. I am interested in getting an iBook, but was told I need the base station and a card. However the router says it is MAC compatible. Which is right?

Next time you should probably drop questions about wireless here: [webmasterworld.com...] It gets you credit for posts, and I think that more people "in the know" would browse that forum as opposed to the foo one (I know I don't always have time for Foo!)

ANYWAY... In answer to your question, if the manufacturer says it'll work, it'll work. We have gone through three different brands of wireless APs at my office and every one of them has worked for the guys with MACs just fine. As long as the computer has a card, you'll be able to get on.

I'm using my Powerbook with a D-Link wireless router. As long as your network is 802.11b/g compatible, you'll be okay.

Yep, you'll need the wireless card but not the Apple branded basestation. "Airport" is just a cute name, not a proprietary protocol, but I don't think any third parties are making wireless cards for the new iBook/Powerbook models.

Don't know about the iBooks, but I believe that the new Powerbooks have it built-in. Mine's about a year old and it does.

You can get the wireless card included when you order the laptop... I ordered my 12" laptop without the card, because I didn't figure I'd use it very often.

Even if they're standard equipment, when you place an order through Apple's site, you can opt not to get the card, and it lowers the price of your machine.
