Ever Get That Feeling?

Two weeks ago I was riding along on StormDancer, a black and white Walker and he suddenly starts tap dancing all over the place, then bolts, brushing me up against a fence.

Not too bad, except for the 16 penny nail that was jutting out from the fence post. Lacerated left forearm, 28 stitches. Nice permanent numb spot on my arm about 2 inches square that extends all the way down to right above my watch.

6 days ago, running a newly acquired Mustang into the trailer, the Mustang decides to kick, broken pinky. Second broken finger in less than 6 months.

Today, strolling through the back field, I feel something hit my right boot. Hard. Copperhead, hissing like mad, has its fangs hung up in my boot and jeans. A frantic tail yank and 3 shots later, dead copperhead. That was the third copperhead I've seen in the last two months so I call animal control. They come out and promptly write me a ticket for shooting a snake. Seems ya need a permit for that. But, for $175 per call, they'll come out and remove a copperhead, if it is trapped. Then they tell me to be on the watch for them this year. Seems they're quite plentiful and since I have horses, I need to be real careful.

Umm, yeah, that's why I shot the one that tried to bite me.

Have you warned friends and family to walk a few steps away from you? :)

It's only illegal if you're caught. ;)

>>You need bigger bullets!

First shot nearly blew it in half, the next two were insurance. ;) I feel like Bad Luck Schleprock. I'm chalking it up to age and slower reflexes.

Copperheads can sense slow reflexes I hear. or feel.

On the bright side, bad things come in threes... even so, I'm thinking, maybe skip the skydiving this week.

How about skipping the horses for a while?

and 3 shots later

Which means you still had rounds left to take care of the unhelpful animal control agents.

Jeez. You must live in the Texas swamps (ever heard of Kemah?)

Been there done that - rattler not copperhead, barb wire not nail, etc etc ad infinitum ad nauseam.

Horses are wonderful animals. Assuming you live over them.... of course, when you're trying to haul a big ol' cow elk out over country where even an atv won't go, a horse is gold on 4 hooves....

BTW, the $175 is cheap compared to your life, coppers are NOTHING to mess with as I'm sure you know. [I called DWR about 10 years ago because a timber rattler was laired up under the house, curled around one of the deck supports, and of course they're protected.... took the agent 4 hours to get here and by then I'd just blown the *** away with a 20ga. I told the agent he'd slithered off.... *sigh*]

Jeez DG - is it rusty nail season already? Didn't you get one through the foot a while back?

Just curious- which is cheaper, the $175 for them to come out, or the ticket?

The ticket would have to cost more... 0.15 for the bullets.
