[cnn.com...]

NEW YORK (AP) -- Phish, the Vermont-based jam band whose legions of dedicated fans made them one of the United States' top touring acts, announced Tuesday that they were breaking up.

Thank God.

Geez... who will the neo-hippie concert-tour-followers follow now? I mean, Phish gave legions of second-generation Dead fans a reason to go on. ;)

Ohh. Glad I don't live in Eugene, OR anymore. I can imagine a lot of them deciding to settle there until they find someone else to follow.

A few of their tunes were actually worth listening to. But... they've grown up and want to move along.

Final concert is here in the North East Kingdom of Vermont for anyone interested in slipping into their tye-dye tee and pants that are two sizes too large at the waist.

I live in Eugene...

Hehehe... Let me know how long it takes them all to show up and start panhandling around the UofO campus for the summer. ;)

I never understood Phish.... Confession... I did the Dead thing in the 70's. Go to three or four concerts in a row, just hang out with the Dead Heads and wait for the music to start playing again. There was such magic in their music. Complex, multi-layered, a story in every song. They were a lot of fun and and had something for everyone.
I tried Phish. Didn't hear any magic... :(

You should hear music, experience magic, and smell petuli oil. How about two out of three? :)

Not a huge phish fan but Trey Anastasio is definitely one of the best living guitarists. Couple that with the fact that the band was musically pretty darn talented compared with 99.99% of the studio-manufactured industrial crap rock, and i certainly am not saying , "thank-g-d".

As for the "hippie" scene, the thought of hanging out and drinking pale ales with a bunch of non-violent, generally kind folks looking to enjoy themselves is a heck of a lot more appealing to me than the alternatives - chicks with black lipstick, wannabe gangstas, the self important "square black glasses" types, heavy metal moshers, bumpin and grindin' suburban teenie boppers, and the rest...

To each his own i guess...

I was kicking around on the streets of Atlanta a couple of years ago, trying to sell my street widgets. Someone came along and told me that Trey was playing that night. So I meandered over that way, sold all my widgets, and got a free ticket to see the show (and I still couldn't get in )

I like Phish. Oh, and I learned how to panhandle in Eugene :)

As long as Ben & Jerry's Phish Food ice-cream still exists, I'm a happy camper.

I think they should get replaced by The Klezmer Mountain Boys [klezmermountainboys.com]. Any band that decides Klezmer and Kentucky Bluegrass would be a good "fusion" should have a cult following.

Phish was immensely talented. But by all means, if you believe music to have nothing to do with playing instruments well and forming groove from rhythm, then enjoy the loss of this talent, they will undoubtedly be replaced by 5 new, suspiciously attractive, talentless hacks (though only one producer) in the near future, bent on taking over your radio.

I lived in Burlington for 2+ years, and got the full effect of the love for Phish. Can't say I enjoyed them myself, but I have a few Phish-head's for friends (and met Fishman's old roommate in college). They are hopping on the tour, and hitting every spot until the finale in Coventry.

As long as they don't pull a KISS style "this time we're REALLY leaving" act, then I say give them their due, and let'em R.I.P.

I was lucky enough to see them live twice, so I'll miss them. I wasn't fanatical about them (I don't own any albums), but it is one the bands which I would try to catch live whenever they came by. They're very, very good live.

>who will the neo-hippie concert-tour-followers follow now?
That's the *problem*. There isn't a third generation jam band ready to take over. SCI or Panic aren't good enough.

>Trey Anastasio is definitely one of the best living guitarists.
Yes. At least when he's sober.

>hanging out and drinking pale ales with a bunch of non-violent, generally kind folks looking to enjoy themselves
Yes. This may sound funny, but in a way, Phish is to music as WebmasterWorld is to others forums. There is a real sense of community between the band and the fans and within the fans. Here's just a few examples...

example:
In the summer of 2000, Phish put on of their festivals at the Oswego airport in NY. 80,000+ fans together for 3 days in the hot sun in 90+degrees. There was no violence. I never saw a fight, I never heard about a fight the whole weekend, I didn't read about any fights on the internet when I got home.

The very next weekend, at the same location, same weather, about the same amount people. There were fights, girls were raped, and utter chaos as people set fire to their own surroundings.

example:
At another festival in the everglades in south Florida. Phish built basically a city for the weekend out of a cow pasture. There were roads, and street signs, etc. Again, 80,000 people. As you walked down these roads, you COULD NOT find one piece of garbage. People even through their cigarette butts into the cans provided on the side of the road.

example:
After a show in the parking lot hanging out partying. We spot a pretty young girl walking (and swerving) totally naked. Within seconds, a guy rushes up to her, covers her in a blanket, and leads her back from the way she came.

I know I'm rambling, but sometimes I take the "it's easy to make fun of Phish and it's fans" a little personal. What Phish did was truly special and the people who were a part of it were very lucky. Peace, people:)

No idea who they are/were ..but if what Mona says is real then I think that the business music ( it should be written that way round since 1970 ...before it was a "sometimes" thing )..needs more and not less of these bands and their followers ...
Remeber the days when you could take your kids to concerts of something other than a merchandise rack with a microphone ....

Wow - I got to see them a few times in the early 90s and they were quite good. Never really paid much attention after that, but enjoyed them back in the day.

All good things must come to an end, I guess.

I saw a couple Phish shows too...I was never a HUGE fan, but they definitely put on really good live shows. Definitely a very fun "people watching" place to be too. If you can stand the smell...it was a very enjoyable atmosphere too.

Had a good time both times. Once dragged along by a roommate in college...once I went voluntarily;) They were very talented musicians, and more than anything could "freestyle" extremely well together.

...picture a bunch of muddy hippies sliding down a large grass hill after a large thunderstorm...priceless;)
