Where were you when you heard about WebmasterWorld?

Hello everybody, I was a member of WebmasterWorld a while ago but let my membership lapse so I've just signed up again and thought I'd tell you a bit about myself and you can do the same if you like.

I first came across WebmasterWorld when I was working for a web development company in a UK prison. I was there for a drugs offence which was the end of a very long and tiring road that I have now put behind me.

UK newspapers have tried to print stories about this place but because of the jail it's in (a private one) and the fact that it's such a revolutionary idea the govt has always stopped them, this isn't some conspiracy theory thing it's a fact, the last paper I know to have rung up was the Daily Mirror, they got nothing but knew enough already to print a sensational story that never saw the light of day.

Why am I saying all this? I'm not sure really I just know that if that place hadn't been there I wouldn't have made it out of the labyrinth that is drug addiction and so I suppose I'm just amazed that it happened at all given the fact that most uk citizens wouldn't want it to happen.

<snip>

So I walked out of the daily mayhem and noise that is jail life into the peace and calm of an office environment, in the middle of a jail. I cannot begin to tell you what a weird feeling that was, outside - madness, inside - peace. I started to relax.

After an initial period of training I started on site optimisation <snip>.

It was a great place to work and because we all lived together too we worked even when we weren't at work, we debated which engine was going to be the best, because this was at a time when Google didn't rule supreme.

We had a lot of big clients and ended up being Googles biggest ppc customer in Europe, they actually used our model to tweak theirs, I know this sounds unbelievable but it's all verifiable. We had 40,000 keyword campaigns running at some points and the spreadsheet we worked out was taken and modified by Google for their customers, this was at the time when adwords had just changed.

I seem to be all over the place with this, there is so much to tell I really could write a book.

One last anecdote, when we left the building we had to be patted down by a screw to make sure we hadnt stolen anything, no one would have but it had to be done and one day we had a client in and when we all lined up to leave for lunch he joined the back of the queue because he never realised that we were all inmates, he just thought that we had picked a strange place to set up business in.

So how did you find WebmasterWorld?

I first found the SEFs and there I read a thread pointing to Webmasterworld. I orginally found the SearchEngineForums thanks to a kind poster who started a thread about our site. I was really in the blue before that, I had no idea that there were any general discussion forums for webmaster issues and searching the web.

Now it seems like Webmasterworld has become a bit like the Google of discussion forums, at least for webmaster and search issues. It's the old Zipf distribution again, the leader dominates over a much weaker second and a third almost neglible competitor....

Time for another sip of the Zinfandel. Cheers!

I came across this forum accidentally.

I was doing a Google search on landscapes of the north (having lived in the north it gets in your blood and I was feeling awfully homesick - still do).

Among the search results was this one:

[webmasterworld.com...]

And that's how I found it.

The first two SEO/web forums I found kept referencing WW threads for answers. I decided to eliminate the middleman.

I kept on getting reffered to posts here (like one which was about getting good Google rankings) and they were all subscriptions. I just got referred here again by a page I'd bookmarked a while a go, and it was once again for subscribers only. Then I figured out that it was only the private forum you had to pay for :D

<snip>

Well, good that your out and reformed into a respecteable member of society. :) I suppose that not paying for bills, and doing consistent learning and research (and the big factor: enjoying it) could give you tons of great information about the industry, and I'm sure you'll be way more valuable of a member here than I.

So how did you find WebmasterWorld?

On Google, while I was looking for a person named "Brett Tabke" :)

My very first look at WebmasterWorld was this page:
[webmasterworld.com...]

It confused me. As I was one of those new internet dude's that wonder around looking what all you can do on the internet and have their own "Hi.My Name is sid. I live in..." sites with ugly designs and huge URLs ("http://angelfire.com/blabla123/blabla12") and think they own great sites, when they are actually quite pathetic.
