[nypost.com...]

In the wake of the electrocution of Jodie Lane, 30, in the East Village last month, Con Ed employees and contractors have inspected more than 160,000 manhole covers, construction plates and grilles....

Twenty-eight problem streetlights were identified yesterday, bringing the citywide total to 185 lamps spewing electricity.

Everything in NYC is engineered to kill the weak and unwary - it's my kind of town.

Just more reason for me to find that place in the boondocks, Bob.

Ms. Lane's "accident" was caused by a worker not properly wrapping a connection, though who knows why any wires should come close to a manhole cover in the first place. Very comforting to know that can happen.

There are also a couple of handfuls of dogs electrocuted each year because of stepping on manhole covers. Might have to add one more -- from now on my pooch always goes first.
